The Addiction Institute of New York (formerly Smithers Alcoholism Treatment and Training Center) is the Division on Substance Abuse within the Department of Psychiatry at St. Luke's/ Roosevelt Hospital in New York City. It has provided substance abuse treatment services for over 30 years. The program begins with a comprehensive assessment by a team of physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers and substance abuse counselors. Detoxification/stabilization services are offered at both locations. The Addiction Institute In-patient Rehabilitation Unit offers a safe, supportive environment for discontinuing problematic alcohol and drug use through a variety of treatment options. These include motivational enhancement, intensive addiction counseling, medical & psychiatric services, cognitive/behavioral treatment, relapse prevention, exercise and nutritional guidance, self-help, and both vocational and family counseling services.

The treatment approach is based on an individualized clinical assessment, a collaborative working relationship with the client, and a cognitive-behavioral treatment model that addresses the whole person and a wide array of effective treatment strategies. Twelve step groups provide supplemental support to the formal clinical programs.
